When you buy coffee directly from the source of roasting, you can often get coffee roasted that week, if not that day.  More recently roasted beans make better cups at home.

Empower a more fair supply chain

Smaller, local roasters go to great lengths to source coffee from its producers (farmers and coffee co-ops).  You're more likely to know the precise origin of the coffee, and maybe even the name of the farm or farmer that your hard earned money is going to.

Save the planet, at least a little bit

More transparency in coffee growing and buying is environmentally friendly.  Small lot coffee is way more likely to be grown organically.  And one origin to one roaster to your home is a lot less greenhouse gas emitted on transporting those beans.
